Work being done in this category is for the purpose of increasing people’s awareness of the remarkable contribution Scots have made to the World (with particular emphasis on Canada and the United States). This work involves gathering and disseminating information which will help increase people’s knowledge of this contribution.
This task is being addressed in two ways. First of all by creating well organized information on the lives and works of Great Scots, such as those shown below, and showing the extent of Scottish influence on the development of the US and Canada as reflected in Scottish Place Names, which abound on the Continent..
Great Scots: Only a few examples are necessary to describe the remarkable situation which exists with regard to what Scots have contributed to the World:
James Watt: Developer of the steam engine which brought about the Industrial Revolution. Did that change the course of Man’s existence?
Alexander Graham Bell: Inventor of the telephone. Did this have an impact on the life of Man? Most every human has benefited in some way from this device.
Andrew Carnegie: World’s richest man in his day and probably its greatest philanthropist until Bill Gates (who is also of Scottish blood).
Alexander Fleming: The discovery of Penicillin. How many lives has this saved around the World? Probably millions!
Robert Watson-Watt: Developer of radar. Beyond helping win the Battle of Britain, how would we fly or navigate ships at night, or in fog? How would we track rain, snow, Twisters, Hurricanes, etc., etc. without radar?
And there are many, many more Great Scots, less recognized perhaps, who added much to Scotland’s contribution.
Place Names: A surprising number of Scottish place names are to be found in the State of Washington, which is about as far away from Scotland as you can get in the contiguous forty-eight States. We anticipate finding an extensive number of Scottish place names in Canada and elsewhere in the US indicating the depth of Scots involvement in the opening up these countries.
